单词 portobello
释义

portobellon.1

Origin: Probably from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Portobello.
Etymology: Probably < Portobello, the name of a port town in Panama. Use of the place name as the name of the game probably came about with reference to the capture of Portobello in 1739 by a British fleet commanded by Admiral Edward Vernon (1684–1757); the game may be named in direct allusion to the victory, or in allusion to one of the public houses and other places in Great Britain which were given the name Portobello around 1740. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pōəɹtoˌbe·lo) /pɔətəʊˈbɛləʊ/.
Obsolete. rare.
