单词 pomary
释义

pomaryn.

Forms: Middle English pomarie, Middle English pomeri, 1600s pomary.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pōmārium, pomerium.
Etymology: < classical Latin pōmārium fruit-garden, orchard (in post-classical Latin also pomerium (frequently from 11th cent. in British sources, from 12th cent. in continental sources)) < pōmum fruit (see pomum n.) + -ārium -ary suffix1. Compare Italian pomario (1314 as †pomaro; also as †pomerio, pomaio). Perhaps compare also Middle French pomeree (c1350; rare).Compare Middle English pomer ‘orchard’ in a later manuscript of the work cited in quots. c13901, c13902:?c1450 Pistel of Swete Susan (Pierpont Morgan) 209 Als we passed thorow þe pomer vs for to playe..Sche come til hire maydenes. Perhaps compare Middle French pommyere (c1500 in an apparently isolated use), and also Old French, Middle French pomeroie , Middle French pommeroie , pommeraye (beginning of the 14th cent. or earlier; earlier in place names (see below); French pommeraie ; compare also Old Occitan pomayret ). This is perhaps reflected in surnames from medieval England, as Samson de la Pumeray (1200), Henry de la Pomereie (1225), Joh. de la Pomeray (1251), Robert Pomerey (1285), Robert Pomeroy (1327), although at least some of these probably reflect French place names (e.g. La Pommeraye (Calvados), La Pommeraie (Seine-Inférieure), or Saint-Sauveur-la-Pommeraie (La Manche)). Quot. 1708 refers to the comment in J. Stow Survey of London (1603) on the church of St Martin Pomeroy. For a discussion of the etymology of this place name see Notes & Queries (1910) 10th Ser. 10 14 Nov. 382–3 and 450–452.
