Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French persecuter.
Etymology: < Middle French persecuter (beginning of the 14th cent. in Old French in sense 1, c1400 in sense 2, 15th cent. in sense 3; French persécuter ), either < persecut- (in persecuteur persecutor n.) or < post-classical Latin persecutare (first half of the 12th cent. in a British source), frequentative of classical Latin persequī to seek out, to pursue, to follow with hostility or malignity, to harass, to chase, hunt, to examine, follow up, to go through with or persist in, in post-classical Latin also to persecute on religious grounds (Vulgate) < per- per- prefix + sequī to follow (see sequent adj.).
