单词 petit déjeuner
释义

petit déjeunern.

Brit. /ˌpɛtɪ ˈdeɪʒəneɪ/, U.S. /ˌpɛdi ˈdeɪʒəˌneɪ/; see also petit adj. and n.
Forms: 1800s petit dejeûner (irregular), 1800s– petit déjeuner, 1900s– petit dejeuner.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French petit déjeuner.
Etymology: < French petit déjeuner (second half of the 19th cent. or earlier: see below) < petit (see petit adj.) + déjeuner déjeuner n. Compare earlier déjeuner n.Not fully naturalized in English. The phrase petit déjeuner is attested in French from at least the end of the 17th cent., but it is unclear whether any instances before the second half of the 19th cent. are to be taken in sense ‘breakfast’ rather than ‘light luncheon’ or perhaps ‘snack’: see Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch s.v. *disjejunare. Compare the following earlier occurrence in sense ‘light luncheon’:1854 W. M. Thackeray Newcomes I. xxii. 205 The Colonel, who speaks French beautifully, you know, told the waiter to get us a petit déjeuner soigné; on which the fellow..said, a ‘nice fried sole, sir,—nice mutton chop, sir,’ in regular Temple-bar English; and brought us Harvey sauce with the chops, and the last Bell's life to amuse us after our luncheon.
In France or (by extension) elsewhere: breakfast.
