Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French alhagi; Latin alhagi.
Etymology: < (i) French alhagi (1717 or earlier), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin alhagi (1586 or earlier; adopted in scientific Latin as Alhagi, genus name (A. Gagnebin 1755, in Acta Helvetica physico-mathematica 2 59)) < Arabic al-ḥāj < al the + ḥāj, denoting the plant (early 11th cent. in Avicenna).The plant was first mentioned in a Western European source by Leonhard Rauwolf (1535–96), German scientist, physician, and explorer, who embarked on a tour of the Orient in 1573, and encountered the plant near the town of Raqqa in Syria; he called it Agul, using a synonym of its Arabic name.
Any of various spiny desert shrubs constituting the Eurasian genus Alhagi (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)); esp. camel thorn, A. maurorum, which exudes a sweet sap from its leaves and branches, thought by some to be the biblical manna (manna n.1 1a).Valid publication of the genus name: A.
