a. Electronics. The imperfect or faulty copying or reproduction of a sampled signal which occurs if the sampling frequency is too low, with the result that the original signal cannot be uniquely reconstructed. Cf. alias n. 4.This is likely to happen if the sampling frequency is less than twice the frequency of the highest-frequency component present in the signal being sampled. Cf. Nyquist frequency n. at Nyquist n. 4b.
