Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic al-ḥamdu li-llāh.
Etymology: < Arabic al-ḥamdu li-llāh, literally ‘the praise is to God’ < al the + ḥamdu , definite nominative of ḥamd praise + li for, to + allāh Allah n.The name of the Prophet Muḥammad (see Muhammad n.) shows a derivative < the same base as Arabic ḥamd . The form Alhandilla (compare quots. 1816 at sense A., 1829 at sense B.) probably reflects the common spoken Arabic variant al-ḥamdillāh, which shows haplology.
