Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Yoruba. Partly a borrowing from Hausa. Etymons: Yoruba àlhájì; Hausa àlhájìi.

Etymology: < (i) Yoruba àlhájì and its etymon (ii) Hausa àlhájìi (also àlhájì when used as a form of address) < Arabic al-ḥājjī < al the + ḥājjī (see Haji n.). Compare earlier Al-Hajj n. 1 and Haji n.The form Alhaja in quot. 1977, denoting a woman, is < Yoruba àlhájà, apparently itself < Hausa àlhájìyáa ( < Arabic), as Yoruba does not normally make a grammatical distinction between masculine and feminine.
