Etymology: < pelta n. + -i- connective, after scientific Latin pelti- (formations in which are found from at least the late 18th cent.: see peltigerine adj.) or French pelti- (formations in which are found from at least the early 19th cent.). Compare also classical Latin pelti- , combining form (in e.g. peltifer : see peltiferous adj.) of pelta shield (see pelta n.).Attested from the mid 19th cent. in a small number of botanical terms exemplified below and also in peltiform adj. Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin origin. The position of the stress in compounds formed on pelti- varies in accordance with the general stress patterns of English.
