Etymology: < scientific Latin Anchitherium, genus name (H. von Meyer 1844, in Neues Jahrbuch für Mineralogie, Geognosie, Geologie und Petrefaktenkunde 297) < ancient Greek ἄγχι near, related to ἄγχειν to squeeze, strangle (see anchoic adj.) + scientific Latin -therium -there comb. form.

Palaeontology.

A small extinct three-toed horse of the genus Anchitherium, known from widely distributed fossil remains of the Miocene period. Also (in form Anchitherium): the genus itself.
