Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Anchisaurus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Anchisaurus, genus name (see quot. 1885) < ancient Greek ἄνχι near (see anchitherium n.) + scientific Latin -saurus -saurus comb. form. Compare earlier anchitherium n. and anchithere n.

Palaeontology.

A genus of small, lightly built, saurischian dinosaurs of the early Jurassic; (also anchisaurus) a dinosaur of this genus.Formerly regarded as a prosauropod, but now considered to be a basal sauropodomorph.

1885 O. C. Marsh in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. 129 169 The name Amphisaurus, given by the writer to a genus of Triassic reptiles, proves to be pre-occupied, and may be replaced by Anchisaurus.

1933 A. S. Romer Vertebr. Paleontol. ix. 189 Anchisaurus..was a small dinosaur, and many of the bones were still hollow in coelurosaur fashion.

2003 B. Bryson Short Hist. Nearly Everything (2004) vi. 114 Some of these at least survive—notably the bones of an anchisaurus, which are in the collection of the Peabody Museum at Yale.
