Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πηκτός , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πηκτός congealed (see pectic adj.) + -ous suffix. Compare French pecteux (1868 in Littré). Compare earlier pectic adj., pectinous adj.
Chemistry and Biochemistry. Now rare.
