Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French paillon.
Etymology: < French paillon (1723; 1588 in Middle French in sense ‘small strip of metal’, 1534 in sense ‘small straw mattress’) < paille straw, chaff (see paly n.) + -on -oon suffix. N.E.D. (1904) treats this as non-naturalized, and gives the pronunciation as (palyoṅ, pæ·lyən) /pajɔ̃/ /ˈpæljən/.
A decorative metallic scale or spangle (see also quot. 1865); spec. a small piece of bright metal foil, used in enamelwork. Cf. paillette n.
