Etymology: < Amarna (more fully Tell el-Amarna (Arabic Tall al-ʿAmārna): see note), the modern name of Akhetaten, the site of a city in ancient Egypt built by Akhenaten (Amenophis IV) in the 14th cent. b.c. on the east bank of the Nile near Mallawi, to the south of the city of Minya.Although the site is frequently called Tell el-Amarna , this designation (with tell n.² as first element) is inaccurate, since the archaeological remains do not constitute a tell.

As a modifier. Designating archaeological finds made in the Egyptian city of el-Amarna; spec. designating a collection of clay tablets or the letters they contain.The Amarna tablets were discovered in 1887, and contain official correspondence dating from the New Kingdom.
