Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin amārus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin amārus bitter in taste or smell, acrid, shrill, harsh, acrimonious, caustic (perhaps < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit amla sour) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier amaricate v. and amaritude n.Compare Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French amer (see amere n.), Old Occitan amar (12th cent.), Italian amaro (see amaro n.).
Now rare.
Having a bitter taste. Also in earliest use of a person: †unpleasant, disagreeable; spiteful (obsolete).
