单词 amaranthine
释义

amaranthineadj.

Brit. /ˌaməˈranθʌɪn/, U.S. /ˌæməˈrænθ(ə)n/, /ˌæməˈrænˌθaɪn/
Forms: 1600s amarantin, 1700s amaranthin, 1600s– amarantine (now rare), 1700s– amaranthine.
Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin amaranthinus ; amaranth n., -ine suffix1.
Etymology: Partly (i) (originally) < post-classical Latin amaranthinus, amarantinus of amaranth, unfading (1570 or earlier; < Hellenistic Greek ἀμαράντινος of amaranth, unfading < ἀμαράντον amaranth n. + -ινος -ine suffix2), and partly (ii) (in sense 3) < amaranth n. + -ine suffix1, perhaps after French amarantine (noun) dark red colour (1787; earlier denoting a kind of plant (1667)). With sense 2 compare earlier amaranthal adj. With sense 3 compare earlier amaranth adj.
