Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi pacīsī.
Etymology: < Hindi pacīsī twenty-five, referring to the highest possible throw (of the cowrie shells) < Sanskrit pañcaviṃśati. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) treats this as non-naturalized and gives only the pronunciation (patʃī·si) /paˈtʃiːsiː/. In O.E.D. (1989) the headword form was given as parcheesi, parchesi on the basis of a note in O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) that these spellings ‘are now usual’.
A four-handed game from South Asia, played on a cruciform cloth or board, on which (in the traditional form of the game) counters are moved according to the casting of six cowrie shells; any of various modern versions of this game.The European game ludo is a simplified form of pachisi.In form Parcheesi, a proprietary name in the United States.
