sitarn.

Brit. /ˈsɪtɑː/, /sɪˈtɑː/, U.S. /səˈtɑr/, /ˈsɪˌtɑr/
Forms: 1800s sitarre, 1700s– sitar, 1800s– setar.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu sitār; Persian sitār.
Etymology: < (i) Urdu sitār, and its etymon (ii) Persian sitār, sih tār ( < sih three ( < an Old Persian reflex of the Indo-European base of three adj.) + tār string of a musical instrument), so called with reference to an earlier form of the instrument, which had three strings. The Greek etymon of cithara n. is apparently unrelated. The form setar reflects the Persian pronunciation.
A stringed musical instrument, traditionally played in India, having a hemispherical body, a long neck, and movable frets.Sitars typically have six or seven principal strings above the frets which are plucked with a metal pick and a number of secondary strings underneath the frets which vibrate in sympathy with the plucked strings.
