Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Sitaris.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Sitaris, genus name (Latreille, 1802) < ancient Greek σιτάριον bit of corn or bread, bit of food ( < σῖτος corn, food (see sito- comb. form) + -άριον , extended form of -ιον , diminutive suffix); with the ending of the scientific Latin word perhaps compare -id suffix².Compare French sitaris (Latreille, 1802).

Entomology.

A genus of blister beetles (family Meloidae) which are kleptoparasites of bees of the genus Anthophora. Also: a beetle of this genus; spec. Sitaris muralis, which is native to western Europe and has a black body with yellow-orange patches on the front of the elytra.Valid publication of the genus name: P. A. Latreille Buffon's Hist. Nat.: Crustacés et Insectes (1802) III.187.
