Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek σιτάρχης or σίταρχος commissary general < ancient Greek σῖτος corn, food (see sito- comb. form) + -άρχης or -αρχος -arch comb. form1.Compare the following earlier example of sitarchy province responsible for providing food for the king's household ( < post-classical Latin sitarchia; already in classical Latin as sītarchia in sense ‘provisions for a journey’ (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius)):1614 W. Raleigh Hist. World ii. vii. 358 Dor..was a strong and powerfull Citie: and the fourth in account of those twelue Principalities or Sitarchies, which Salomon ereced.
