Etymology: < ornitho- comb. form + -lite comb. form1, after scientific Latin Ornitholithus (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (1735)) or French ornitholithe (1763).
Geology. Now historical and rare.

1984 J. G. Greene Amer. Sci. in Age of Jefferson ix. 247 Eaton did list and name six kinds of organic remains found in the region he had traversed, calling them mammodolite, ornitholite, amphibolite, and the like according to their resemblance to living animals or plants.
