Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, ken n.2
Etymology: Probably < a word meaning ‘excrement’ (perhaps ultimately a variant of dung n.1) + ken n.2Such a word meaning ‘excrement’ is perhaps reflected by the following examples, although (in view of the relative chronology and the narrow range of attestations) danna may instead show a back-formation or rationalization from the present word:1819 J. H. Vaux New Vocab. Flash Lang. in Memoirs II. 184 Knapping a jacob from a danna-drag. This is a curious species of robbery..; it signifies taking away the short ladder from a nightman's cart, while the men are gone into a house, the privy of which they are employed emptying, in order to effect an ascent.1859 J. C. Hotten Dict. Slang 29 Danna, excrement. Danna drag, a nightman's or dustman's cart.
