Etymology: < dun adj. + -ling suffix1, so called on account of the dusky brown colour of its plumage.
A common small migratory sandpiper found throughout the Holarctic region, Calidris alpina, which has a downcurved black bill and black legs, and (in the breeding season) reddish-brown upperparts and a black belly. Also called red-backed sandpiper.
