Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin non nobis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin non nobis not to us (Vulgate), the first words of Psalm 115 (part of 113 in the Vulgate; see sense B.) < classical Latin nōn not (see non- prefix) + nōbīs , dative of nōs , 1st person plural pronoun (see nosism n.).

Expressing gratitude or thanksgiving (see sense B.). Also more fully non nobis, Domine.
