Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: French almadie; Portuguese almadia.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < Middle French, French †almadie, denoting various boats (1515 denoting a large African dugout canoe, 1558 (in the passage translated in quot. 1568) denoting a bark boat used by Brazilian Indians, 1690 denoting an Indian boat with a square back; compare Middle French, French †almande kind of African barge (1564)) < Portuguese almadia (15th cent.) < Arabic al-maʿdiya < al the + maʿdiya ferry, ferryboat < ʿadā to cross. In β. forms < Portuguese almadia (see above). Compare Italian †almadia (1538 or earlier, in a Portuguese East Indian context; 1598 in Florio; < Portuguese), and also (apparently directly < Arabic) Spanish almadía raft (1385), American Indian dugout canoe (a1550).With the form almodie compare French †almodia chaloupe used by black slaves in Portuguese East India (c1680), variant of almadie.
Now chiefly historical.
Any of various types of dugout or canoe, esp. as used in parts of Africa and Asia; (also) a type of long swift riverboat.
