Etymology: < post-classical Latin almucabala, almucabola algebra, equation (from 12th cent. in British and continental sources), also almachabel (1570 in the source translated in quot. 1570) < Arabic al-muqābala (in ʿilm al-jabr wa'l-muqābala : see algebra n.) < al the + muqābala comparison, confrontation, collation, verbal noun < qābala to compare, to collate, to confront. In later use the word was associated by folk etymology with Cabbala n. (an association made in post-classical Latin from at least the 16th cent.), and hence taken to denote an occult branch of knowledge.
