Etymology: Alteration (after -cle suffix) or misreading of post-classical Latin almades (plural) pickled olives (1518 or earlier as halmades ; 1668 or earlier as almades ) < ancient Greek ἁλμάδες , plural of ἁλμάς , use as noun (short for ἁλμάς ἐλάα pickled olive) of ἁλμάς salted, steeped in brine < ἅλμη brine ( < ἅλς salt (see halo- comb. form¹) + -μη , suffix forming nouns) + -άς -ad suffix¹.

Obsolete. rare.
