Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mustard n., gas n.1
Etymology: < mustard n. + gas n.1, so called on account of its odour, which is similar to that of mustard, garlic, or horseradish when in an impure form. Compare German Senfgas (1919 or earlier), French gaz moutarde (1931). Compare also yperite n.
A colourless oily liquid whose vapour causes severe irritation and blistering of the skin, used in chemical warfare, originally at Ypres during the First World War (1914–18); bis(2-chloroethyl)sulphide, (ClCH2CH2)2S.
