Etymology: < Afrikaans mossie sparrow < Dutch mosje , musje little sparrow < mos , mus sparrow (cognate with Middle High German musche and apparently also with Old High German musca sparrow; further etymology uncertain; perhaps related to Old French moisson sparrow, probably ultimately < a derivative of classical Latin musca fly: see Musca n.) + -je diminutive suffix.
