Etymology: < black adj. + salt n.1, originally after post-classical Latin sal niger (a1363 (in the passage translated in quot. a1387) or earlier).
Any of various inorganic salts that are naturally dark in colour, or are darkened by admixed charcoal, soot, etc.; spec. (in plural) impure potash obtained by leaching wood ash and evaporating the resulting solution (now historical).
