单词 black sash
释义

Black Sashn.

Brit. /ˌblak ˈsaʃ/, U.S. /ˌblæk ˈsæʃ/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: black adj., sash n.1
Etymology: < black adj. + sash n.1, so called in allusion to the sashes worn during the movement's silent protest vigils. Compare Afrikaans Swart Serp (1956 or earlier; probably after English; < swart black (see swart adj.) + serp sash ( < Dutch sjerp : see scarf n.1)).A black sash was originally worn in 1955 as a symbol of mourning for the ‘death’ of the constitution when the National Party government expanded the legislature and Senate in order to obtain the two-thirds majority which enabled them to rescind the voting rights of the Cape Province's Coloured population (compare coloured adj. 3d).
A women's civil and human rights movement in South Africa. Originally and frequently attributive, esp. in Black Sash Movement.Originally known officially as the Women's Defence of the Constitution League, the Black Sash was founded in 1955. It protested against the injustices of apartheid, while also providing legal and administrative aid to disadvantaged sectors of society through a network of advice centres. In the post-apartheid era its general membership was disbanded, but the organization has maintained its advice centres, and continues to serve as a human rights watchdog.
