Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish bable.
Etymology: < Spanish (originally regional: Asturias) bable (late 18th cent.), probably of imitative origin (compare babble n.), the dialect probably being so called on account of its perceived inelegance and resemblance to confused or stammering speech. 1841 Edinb. Rev. Jan. 398 [The Spanish language], springing from the north-western provinces, was founded on the Latin, with the ‘Bable’, (the still spoken ‘rustica’ of the Asturias), and the Gallician.
1869 Anthropol. Rev. 7 162 The Bable dialect still preserved among the Asturians.
1927 Periodical Mar. 5 In Asturias the country folk still talk bable.
1997 Los Angeles Times (Nexis) 2 Feb. a24 ‘No to the Mines,’ says graffiti in Bable, the local dialect, on one of the abandoned buildings.
