Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek μέθη , -o- connective, -mania comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μέθη strong drink, drunkenness ( < μεθύειν to be intoxicated < μέθυ wine (see mead n.1)) + -o- connective + -mania comb. form, probably after French méthomanie (1855). Compare also French méthyomanie (1845). Both French words are attested only in dictionaries until the early 20th cent. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (meþomēi·niă) /mɛθəʊˈmeɪnɪə/.
Medicine. Obsolete.
