Etymology: < Okanagan mítx̣aw, the name of the valley formerly inhabited by the Methows.The form Smeathhowe (attested 1811) contains the Salishan nominalizing prefix s-.

A member of a North American Indian people formerly inhabiting the Methow Valley in north central Washington state and a small area on the other side of the Okanogan River just south of Mallott, and now one of the Colville Confederated Tribes, mainly living on the Colville Reservation in the same area.
