Etymology: < metallo- comb. form + -graphy comb. form. Compare French métallographie (1771; earlier in form metallographie (1548 in Middle French in sense 1); 1874 in sense 2).In sense 2 apparently coined by Nicholas Zach (see quot. 1851 at sense 2).

2. A printing process similar to lithography, in which metal plates are used instead of stones. Now rare.

1851 Art Jrnl. 13 99/1 Mr. Nicholas Zach, of Munich, has discovered a new process in lithography, by which he can give to any metal plate..a preparation that makes the design show itself in relief..on the plate. Mr. Zach designates the process, metallography.
1909 C. Harrap Metalography Pref. p. v The title ‘Metalography’ has been adopted instead of ‘Metallography’ which might be objected to, as it is already used in the metallurgical profession with quite a different meaning; whilst in the records of the Patent Office it is used as expressing printing from metals.

The scientific study of metals; spec. the study of the structure of metals using chiefly microscopic and X-ray diffraction techniques; the properties of a metal as revealed by this.The subject is generally regarded as having been founded by Sir Henry Sorby (1826–1908), English geologist, who pioneered the microscopic study of polished rocks and metals in the 1860s.
