Etymology: < (i) Middle French precesseur (1374; French †precesseur ) and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin praecessor person who precedes, predecessor (Vetus Latina) < classical Latin praecess- , past participial stem of praecēdere precede v.2 + -or -or suffix. Compare earlier antecessor n., predecessor n., and successor n. Compare also earlier precede v.2 1.
Obsolete (archaic in later use).
A person who precedes another in a particular office or position; a predecessor.
