Etymology: Probably < methe n. Compare myth adj.The word may also have been influenced by meet adj. (compare sense 2c s.v.), the adjective corresponding to met n.¹ (for the interchangeability of use of met n.¹ and methe n. see etymological note s.v. methe n.). The unusual form mooth (see quot. 1699) probably represents a hypercorrect spelling (since in north-eastern Scots of the 17th cent. the graphs oo and ei represent the same sound: /i(ː)/).

Obsolete (Scottish in later use).
