Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French bonne femme.
Etymology: < French bonne femme (1735 in à la bonne femme, in the French edition of the work cited in quot. 1733) < bonne , feminine of bon good (see boon adj.) + femme housewife (see femme n.). Compare housewife fashion adv. at housewife n. Compounds 2.
Cookery.
As postmodifier, and in à la bonne femme. Designating a dish (in early use sweet, later more usually savoury, such as fish or soup) cooked in a traditional manner or with simple ingredients such as fresh vegetables or herbs.
