Origin: A borrowing from Manx. Etymon: Manx bonnag.
Etymology: < Manx bonnag (1866 or earlier), apparently < English bannock n. (compare forms at that entry).
Chiefly Manx English.
Originally probably: a large flat, unleavened loaf of barley bread cooked on a griddle and having a hard crust. In later use: a kind of soda bread, esp. one containing dried fruit and having a rich, cake-like texture.

1894 Isle of Man Examiner 4 Aug. 5/5 Nor are barley bonnags, potatoes and herring, the chief food of the Manxman.
1895 Peel City Guardian 9 Feb. I called at Tom Carran's for nut meg..and from that..up to Linney's for a couple of bonnags.
