Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: mangan- comb. form, -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < mangan- comb. form + -ite suffix1. In sense 2 probably after French manganite (A. Gorgeu 1862, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 66 153).
1. Mineralogy. Basic manganese oxide, MnO(OH), a monoclinic mineral which occurs as dark grey or black prismatic crystals and fibrous masses and is an important ore of manganese.
