Etymology: < Middle French, French psychogonie (1564 in Rabelais as psycogonie : see quot. 1737) < post-classical Latin psychogonia generation of the soul, especially with reference to Plato's Timaeus (4th or 5th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek ψυχογονία generation of the soul, especially with reference to Plato's Timaeus (in Plutarch and other authors) < ancient Greek ψυχο- psycho- comb. form + -γονία -gony comb. form. With later use compare psychogenesis n. 1, psychogeny n.Compare the following instance of the post-classical Latin form psychogonia in an English context:1678 R. Cudworth True Intellect. Syst. Universe i. iv. 214 Plutarch,..in his Timæan Psychogonia,..does at large industriously maintain the same.
