Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Abiturient.
Etymology: < German Abiturient candidate for the Abitur (see Abitur n.), also pupil who has recently passed the Abitur (1788) < post-classical Latin abiturient- , abituriens (1666 in a German source, denoting a secondary school leaver), present participle of abiturire to be about to leave (a1536) < classical Latin abit- , past participial stem of abīre to go away (see abition n.) + -urīre , suffix forming desiderative verbs (see -urient suffix).In abiturient examination (compare quots. 1863, 1911) after German Abiturientenexamen (1789; now rare), lit. ‘examination of candidates for the Abitur’. In plural form Abiturienten after the German plural form. O.E.D. Suppl. (1972) gives the naturalized pronunciation (æbitiūə·riĕnt) /æbɪˈtjʊərɪənt/.
