Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: auto- comb. form1, laryngoscopy n.
Etymology: < auto- comb. form1 + laryngoscopy n. (although this is first attested slightly later), after German Autolaryngoskopie ( J. N. Czermak Der Kehlkopfspiegel (1860) iii. 22).
Medicine. Now historical.
Originally: examination of one's own larynx by means of a laryngoscope. In later use also: direct examination of the larynx of a patient (using a laryngoscope without a mirror). Cf. autoscopy n. 1.
