Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. aceto-chloride Brit. /əˌsiːtəʊˈklɔːrʌɪd/, /ˌasᵻtəʊˈklɔːrʌɪd/, U.S. /ˌæsəˌtoʊˈklɔˌraɪd/, /ˌæsədoʊˈklɔˌraɪd/, /əˌsidoʊˈklɔˌraɪd/.
Forms: before a vowel usually acet-.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin acētum , -o- connective.
Etymology: < classical Latin acētum acetum n. + -o- connective; in sense 2 after acetic acid n. Compare French acéto- (formations in which are found from the mid 19th cent.). With sense 2 compare scientific Latin aceto- (formations in which are found from the end of the 19th cent.).Formations are found in sense 1 from the first half of the 19th cent. and in sense 2 from the early 20th cent.
Chemistry.
1. Forming the names of compounds, groups, etc., containing an acetyl group (—COCH3), or derived from acetic acid, as aceto-chloride, acetosodacetate, etc. See also acetaniline n., acetonitrile n., acetophenone n., etc.
