Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Acetobacter.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Acetobacter, genus name (M. W. Beijerinck 1898, in Zentralbl. f. Bakteriol., Parasitenkunde, Infektionskrankheiten u. Hygiene Abt. II. 4 211) < aceto- aceto- comb. form + bacter- (in bacterium bacterium n.).
(In form Acetobacter) a genus of gram-negative aerobic bacteria which oxidize ethanol to acetic acid, and are typically found as a film or skin on the surface of liquid media; (also acetobacter) a bacterium or bacteria of this genus; a film composed of such bacteria, a vinegar mother.
