Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French acétite.
Etymology: < French acétite (1787 in the source translated in quot. 1788) < acét- (in acétique acetic adj.) + -ite -ite suffix1. Compare earlier acetous acid n. at acetous adj. Compounds, and also acetic acid n., and acetate n. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ·sĭtəit) /ˈæsɪtaɪt/.
Chemistry. Obsolete.
A salt of the supposed acetous acid, believed to contain one oxygen atom fewer in its molecule than acetic acid.These salts are now known to be acetates.
