Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin abulia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin abulia (1828 or earlier) < ancient Greek ἀβουλία ill-advisedness, thoughtlessness, irresolution, indecision < ἀ- a- prefix6 + βουλή will (see boule n.3) + -ία -ia suffix1. In β. forms probably partly after German Abulie (1832 or earlier) and partly (in later use) after French aboulie (1883).
Originally Psychiatry.
Loss or impairment of the ability to act, make decisions, or initiate physical or mental activity, as a symptom of mental illness or injury to the brain; (gen.) absence of will power, indecisiveness; an instance of this.
