单词 margate
释义

margaten.

Brit. /ˈmɑːɡeɪt/, U.S. /ˈmɑrˌɡeɪt/
Forms: 1700s– margate, 1900s– marget, 1900s– margot. Also with capital initial.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. The synonymous market fish n. at market n. Compounds 2, maggot-fish (see Dict. Bahamian Eng. s.v.), and margaret-fish at Margaret n. 3a probably show variants of the same word. An etymology has been suggested from the place name Margate in Kent, south-eastern England; for a possible explanation for this name being given to a fish of the western Atlantic see quot. 1902 at sense 1.There is probably no connection with French regional (Côtes-du-Nord and Normandy) margate, said by Littré to be a corruption of French regional (Finistère and Morbihan) morgate cuttlefish (also given by F. Godefroy Dict. de l'ancienne langue française (1880 1902) as margade (17th cent.), morgade; < Breton morgad, morgadenn).
1. Originally North American and Caribbean. More fully margate-fish, margate grunt. A deep-bodied grunt, Haemulon album, found in the western Atlantic and important as a food fish. Cf. Margaret n. 3a.
