Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French margay.
Etymology: < French margay (Buffon, 1765), earlier Middle French, French †margaia (Thevet, 1575) < Tupi mbaraka'ya cat ( > Portuguese maracajá (1587)).
A small wild cat, Felis wiedii, which has large eyes and a yellowish coat with black spots and stripes, found in Central and South American forests.
