单词 margeline
释义

margelinen.

Forms: 1500s–1700s margeline, 1600s margellane, 1600s mareleyne, 1600s morgeline.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French morgeline.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman morgeline (13th cent.) and Middle French, French morgeline (15th cent.) < post-classical Latin morgellina (12th cent.; 14th cent. in a British source), probably alteration of morsus gallinae , denoting both pimpernel and chickweed (although only attested from 13th cent. in glossaries; from c1300 in British sources) < classical Latin morsus bite (see morse n.1) + gallīnae , genitive of gallīna hen (see gallinaceous adj.). Compare Italian mordigallina (13th cent.). The name is usually explained as arising from the fact that hens are frequently observed to eat such weeds; compare henbit n.T. Cooper Thesaurus (1565) (s.v. Anagallis) gives margelina as a Latin form. The identity in spelling with some of the β forms s.v. marjoram n. is probably entirely coincidental.
Obsolete.
Any of several low-growing weeds, esp. the ivy-leaved speedwell, Veronica hederifolia, and the scarlet pimpernel, Anagallis arvensis.
